NOx Charge (Nitrogen Oxide Levy)
How tiered NOx bands combine with CO₂ to form your total VRT — with examples.
The NOx charge is part of the VRT total for Category A vehicles registered after 31 December 2019. It’s combined with the CO₂‑based charge:
Total VRT = CO₂ charge + NOx charge
Bands and amounts
NOx (mg/km) | Amount per mg |
---|---|
0–40 | €5 |
Next 40 (up to 80) | €15 |
Above 80 | €25 |
If you can’t provide satisfactory NOx evidence, maximum charges apply: €4,850 for diesel and €600 for others.
Worked examples
2016 1.8L petrol saloon
- NEDC CO₂ 124 g/km → WLTP calc: 124 × 0.9227 + 34.554 = 148.97 ≈ 148 g/km
- OMSP €27,871 → CO₂ band 25% = €6,967
- NOx 0.008 g/km = 8 mg/km → €5 × 8 = €40
- Total VRT = €7,007
2006 3.0L diesel SUV
- NEDC CO₂ 213 g/km → WLTP calc: 213 × 1.1405 + 12.858 = 255.78 ≈ 255 g/km
- OMSP €2,542 → CO₂ band 41% = €1,042
- NOx 0.090 g/km = 90 mg/km → (40×€5)+(40×€15)+(10×€25) = €1,050
- Total VRT = €2,092
2015 1.9L diesel hatchback
- NEDC CO₂ 103 g/km → WLTP calc: 103 × 1.1405 + 12.858 = 130.33 ≈ 130 g/km
- OMSP €12,017 → CO₂ band 17.5% = €2,102
- No NOx evidence → default charge for diesel: €4,850
- Total VRT = €6,952
2010 5.0L petrol sports coupé
- No CO₂ evidence → 41% of OMSP €30,847 = €12,647
- No NOx evidence for petrol → €600
- Total VRT = €13,247
Quick conversion
If your doc shows NOx in grams per km, multiply by 1,000 to get mg/km before applying the bands above.
